GI Initiatives

There are many Geographic Information (GI) initiatives which will have an impact on the IGGI community. IGGI encourages members to be aware of the latest GI developments and play an active role in any consultation.

This page provides visitors with an introduction to the GI initiatives led by central government departments and agencies.

The digital national framework (DNF) is an industry standard for integrating and sharing business and geographic information from multiple sources.

arrow downarrow upINSPIRE - INfrastructure for SPatial InfoRmation in Europe

The Infrastructure for Spatial Information (INSPIRE) in the Community is a Directive to create a European Spatial Data Infrastructure by improving the interoperability of spatial information across the European Union at a local, regional, national and international level.

In doing so it aims to facilitate improvements in the sharing of spatial information between public authorities and provide improved public access to spatial information.

The environment will be the first theme to be covered but INSPIRE will eventually extend to other themes such as agriculture and transport. Further information on INSPIRE can be found at inspire.jrc.it.

INSPIRE implementation blueprint A presentation that:

- Explains why INSPIRE is needed and what it will involve;
- Outlines the components that will be required to implement the Directive;
- Describes the implementation vision;
- Presents a high level blueprint on how that vision will be realised;
- Highlights the importance of using existing spatial information assets;
- Illustrates the federated approach to implementation
